The speech members have been busy with a total of two speech meets this year, and 7 more coming up. The team finished 5th at their first meet, the MUDECAS Conference Meet, and 5th place at the Auburn Meet. Pawnee City is hosting the Caffeine Classic this Saturday, February 22. With nineteen teams attending, this will be one of the biggest meets of the year.
When asked what practices are like, Kailey Hartman responded, “I do extemporaneous speaking, so I prepare a 5-7 minute-long speech about current events. My practices look like preparing and giving a speech or talking about current events and reading the news.” Kailey placed 3rd at MUDECAS and was the champion at Auburn.
Anna Meints is a member of the OID team with Madolyn Gottula, Cameron Ottersberg, Kaitlyn Svoboda, and Abby Dietrich. She also does a duet with Madolyn. Anna commented on what her practices look like because she does a different type of speech. “Practices can be really time-consuming. We work very hard on our speeches with memorization, presentation, and delivery, which can take hours out of our week.” The OID team placed 3rd at MUDECAS and at the Auburn Invite, and the duet placed 4th at MUDECAS.
Tanya Sampont is going to compete in Entertainment. She commented, “My practices are just me trying to get the correct expressions and voices for my characters, which can be difficult.”
The next meet is Saturday, February 22 in Pawnee City. Good luck, speech team!
