On October 2, the FFA Students of Pawnee City travel to Tecumseh to compete in land judging. When Luke Hunzeker was asked about land judging, he said, “We try to figure out the class of the land. We are given four pits in a field, and then look at the quality of the soil, the slope of the land we are judging, and the depth of the soil.” The FFA kids also try to figure out the soil texture, how much erosion has occurred, and how far down the subsoil is. They do all this to figure out if the land should be used for crops, as a pasture, or just be used for wildlife.
When Dylan Layne was asked what he did well and what he could have done better, he said, “I did well on land classes but could do better on identifying the surface texture.” The team of Madolyn Gottula, Taelyn Blecha, Tyler Tegtmeier, and Dylan Layne got second place and qualified for State.
The State Competition is scheduled on October 16 in Norfolk, NE. Good luck!
